The Cumberland Basin Bridges Scheme
comprises the swing bridge at the entrance lock. The bridge over the River Avon and the interchanges which serve Hotwells
Cumberland Road and Clift House Road
It is the first scheme of its kind to be constructed in Bristol to assist traffic
flow by the use of carriageways at different levels.
The works were initiated by
the Rt. Hon. Ernest Marples M.P. on Monday 4th February 1963 and the scheme was opened to traffic on Wednesday 14th April 1965 by the Rt. Hon. Tom Fraser M.P.
