He stayed at the Seafield Arms, in a private residence on Grant Street, and visited Cullen House. Many local tales from residents and fishermen found their way into the pages of MacDonald's memorable companion novels set in Cullen and its environs- Malcolm (1875) and The Marquis of Lossie (1877).
